Passat GTE?

So Looks like GTE is becoming the next big thing for VW...

Passat GTE is first plug-in hybrid by Volkswagen in saloon and estate body style
Combines TSI engine and electric motor for maximum power output of 218 PS
Driving range of over 600 miles; up to 31 miles in all-electric E-mode

Cool yes, but I can't help but fear what VW is doing to the GTI brand, thats what as cool about the Golf GTE, it was a GTI. The Passat? Not so much....

I don't really have a problem with the Passat GTE. It is nice that people have the choice of the Golf GTE which is smaller, or the Passat GTE which is larger.

The Passat GTE plug-in hybrid is going to accelerate from 0-60 mph in less than 8 seconds, and I think that is something to be excited about for a hybrid vehicle.

In all electric mode the Passat GTE can travel 31 miles at 80 mph.

It's too bad that the GTE models aren't coming to NA. Even if they did n't sell them everywhere in NA, certain markets would work really well. I think of places like California and Vancouver, British Columbia.

I love how they had the charging port hidden, plus overall it looks great.

HOpefully the take rate on these are good enough.

I think VW missed an opportunity here. Could have concealed the charging port behind the VW badge, like the locking system is concealed behind the VW logo on previous-generation New Beetle:

This will NOT be the case and is extremely misleading. In EV mode it will be lucky to get 22 miles going under 30mph! At 80mph I'll be very surprised if it can do more any more 10 miles.

I own and drive a Nissan LEAF which has a 24kWh battery pack. The LEAF can do about 30miles at 80mph. The GTE has an 8.7kWh battery pack which is roughly 1/3 of the LEAFs pack size. Obviously, 1/3 of 30miles is 10 miles but I expect the GTE will not allow you to use the full 8.7kWh to 'protect' the battery, hence the assumption that it will do no more than 10 miles at that speed.

EV mode will be great for stop/start traffic and some urban driving. The petrol engine will be far more efficient for high-speed, motorway driving and will allow GTE drivers to recharge the battery by coasting at speed. Potential owners need to be aware that the claimed range of all hybrids (and BEVs) is grossly overstated for marketing purposes and that real world figures will waaay lower.

Cheers

I guess as EV tech develops we should see that type of speed and range happen more, but i don't think it will happen any time soon.
